marijuana packaging ready to ship from Los Angeles

Sometimes, you need your marijuana packaging right away

We can help you with that!

We have many different bags in stock, and several are especially well-suited for packaging cannabis flowers (and various other marijuana derivative products such as edibles). The bags shown here are only a small portion of what we carry in stock, including other colors available in these sizes. Additionally, many of these bags can be purchased without a clear side.

All of the bags shown here contain real aluminum — very similar to what you might have in your kitchen — the outside of the bags is shiny, and the inside of the bag shows the dull side of the foil This can create a very elegant look and feel with the right labels and size selection.

Common weights/sizes for marijuana packaging:

These images depict common weight designations for cannabis flowers, contained in the variously sized bags which we carry in stock, meant to give general illustration for sizing and how it might look. There are many variables, both technical and aesthetic; if you have a question, we can help you determine which size is right for you.

Recreational-cannabis is now available in Michigan — congratulations!

recreational-cannabis logo for Michigan

Recreational-cannabis is finally on the menu in Michigan, and we look forward to serving your packaging needs!

Details and specifics for how the new The Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act (MRTMA) differs from (and is similar to) the existing Medical Marijuana Facilities Licensing Act (MMFLA) guidelines can be found on Michigan’s LARA (“Licensing and Regulatory Affairs”) website here.

Additionally, here are some useful links for navigating the LARA site, drilling down to the newest “Adult Use” category:

While packaging guidelines will likely evolve and finalize over the next months, and perhaps even years, some things have already been established. The clearest description that I could find while writing this is contained in a PDF file which covers many other aspects of the currently prevailing rules (in addition to packaging). Clicking the link will either open the document in your browser, or prompt a download, depending on how your system is configured. “Rule 49” is concerned with packaging, and is found on page 46 of the linked PDF file (as of this writing).

Rule 49. Marihuana product sale or transfer; labeling and packaging requirements. (1) Before a marihuana product is sold or transferred to or by a marihuana retailer, the container, bag, or product holding the marihuana product must have a label and be sealed with all of the following information: (a) The name of the licensee and the state license number of the producer, including business or trade name, and tag or source number as assigned by the statewide monitoring system. (b) The name of the licensee and the state license number including business or trade name of the licensee that packaged the product, if different from the marihuana processor of the marihuana product. (c) The unique identification number for the package or the harvest, if applicable. (d) Date of harvest, if applicable. (e) Name of strain, if applicable. (f) Net weight in United States customary and metric units. (g) Concentration of THC and CBD. (h) Activation time expressed in words or through a pictogram. (i) Name of the marihuana safety compliance facility that performed any test, any associated test batch number, and any test analysis date. (j) The universal symbol for marihuana product published on the agency’s website. (k) A warning that states all the following: (i) “For use by individuals 21 years of age or older only. Keep out of reach of children.” (ii) “It is illegal to drive a motor vehicle while under the influence of marihuana.” (iii) “National Poison Control Center 1-800-222-1222.” (2) An edible marihuana product sold by a marihuana retailer shall comply with Rule 45(7).

Artwork for the required recreational-cannabis logo is available from the LARA website as both PNG and EPS files. If you are interested in custom printed bags, we can help make sure that this logo is integrated into your artwork in a compliant and attractive way.

At HQ Packaging, we are committed to serving the recreational-cannabis market; Michigan is an evolving and exciting market, and we are very interested in learning more about it through interactions with customers as our understanding evolves with the laws. If you are looking for packaging, please contact us – we will be very competitive, not only with pricing, but also with services offered to help you take advantage of this new opportunity, and to allow us to learn about your state “on the job”.

“California Universal Symbol for Cannabis”

“California Universal Symbol for Cannabis”

This symbol will need to be placed on all custom printed bags.

The state of California has released symbols to be used on all packaging for recreational cannabis. It is available for download as a jpeg, a PNG, or a PDF.

It is not clear if the black color is intentional. On other publications, the symbol was described as being a specific color of red (although the shape was somewhat different).

In either case, this is a good resource for designing your packaging. Of course, if you decide to use custom printed bags, HQ Packaging will take care of that for you.

Images of “recreational cannabis” bag in use

14 grams in 5.5" x 5.25" bag

Our uniquely-sized stand-up-pouches are designed with the cannabis user in mind. The bag’s wide opening, relative to the depth of the bag, provides the end-user with a more relaxed and convenient experience selecting and extracting specific blossoms. The bag can also accommodate a wider range of accessories that the end user might desire to carry alongside your product.

The most common payloads for this bag are 7 grams and 14 grams dried flowers. Below are images of two examples (click on either image to be taken to the product page):

Our recreational cannabis bag “breaks the rules”

square bag image

The proportions of most stock unprinted stand-up bags follow, wittingly or not, an ancient mathematic and aesthetic convention. Our newest bag size rejects these traditional conventions in favor of usability for our customers (particularly in the recreational cannabis industry).

Fun Fact:For most stock bags, the relationship between the width and the height adhere to the “Golden Ratio”. There are many explanations and applications for this ratio, but in its most oversimplified form “if the long side divided by the short side is approximately 1.6, it will be pleasing to the eye”.

The actual number is 1.6180339887498948482…, but for the sake of this post, “roughly 1.6” will do.

When HQ Packaging first hung out its shingle, so to speak, we carried six different sizes of stand up bags in stock. These are shown in the table below with the dimensions and the “ratio”. If you click on the link in the leftmost column, a new window/tab will open showing all of our offerings in that size.

Standard Stock Sizes
# Overall Dimensions Width Height Gusset
1 3.125” x 5.0” x 2.0” 3.125” 5.0” 1.60
2 4.0” x 6.4” x 2.3” 4.0” 6.4” 1.60
3 5.0” x 8.0” x 3.0” 5.0” 8.0” 1.60
4 6.0” x 9.4” x 3.25” 6.0” 9.4” 1.57
5 6.9” x 11.0” x 3.5” 6.9” 11.0” 1.59
6 7.6” x 11.75” x 4.0” 7.6” 11.75” 1.55

Why is this a problem for recreational cannabis?

Recreational cannabis, or the “flowers” more specifically, are not simply poured out of the bag like one would pour mixed nuts, tea leaves, or rice. The user typically wants to be able to reach in and pinch of a specific bit of the product without dumping all of the flowers out. In a conventional bag, the smaller sizes do not allow this, leading to end-user frustration.

That is why we have produced the “square bag”.
